The fact that Substack offers all of that pretty seamlessly is a huge pull because I can focus more on the storytelling-even if it's got fewer bells and whistles. I can build better sites on WordPress and more customized emails on MailChimp, but I have to manage all of it, which takes time away from writing. I ended up on Substack because I like the "all in one" aspect of it since writing is more hobby than career (or even "side hustle"). I appreciate the insight! I'm sitting at like 7 subs currently, and most of them are family/friends.

Of course, you can link your new stuff when you post it, but for those who keep spamming their work, well there is a mute option. Self-promotion won't work that well, showing what you like and supporting other writers, which we should do anyway, is more likely to get others to check out your work. Post consistently, be active on Notes and restack things you like. All that follow for follow, recommend for recommend and sub for sub mentality doesn't work that much on Substack, which I find refreshing because it allows for meaningful interaction between your readers and you, even if it's only a handful. So getting organic subs from people who are actually interested in reading your stuff is crucial. The more inactive subs you have the more this rate will go down, obviously. My open rate thus far hovers between 45 and 65% which is good I am told.

So the free subscriber number doesn't really say too much, esp. Some of those may be fake accounts though, happens, too. Either way, it's a slow process, don't expect to make any money from it at first.Ī is in its second month and I have 72 subscribers now. There are a few Short Story Substacks that do quite well, but most of them are from authors who have been at it for some time. If you start at zero without any published work or readership, you most likely will get a handful of readers who are also writers from the Substack network but you'll soon hit a limit there and you'll need to balance the time it takes to network and interact with fellow writers with all the rest there is to do and to write. Established writers go to Substack because they bring a lot of readers with them. I am only starting out, so not the authority on growing audience, which is hard on Substack, and slow, esp.
